Side Channels
Between 2014 and 2018, I had created a group of references, studies, and wooden low relief sculptures that reflected my interest in water held in reservoirs behind hydroelectric dams. I also gathered together a few found objects, scraps of visual poetry and a series of oversized caddisfly cases that I made out of cardboard, sticks, pebbles, reeds and pine cones fragments. I made one such carapace with crushed oyster shells. My wife, Sue Hopkins, took the notion of aquatic insect 'dwellings' even further, fabricating charming examples out of tiny seashells, beans, and spices.
I digress.
An enchanting parlour, the front reception area of Mile Zero Dance (Edmonton, Alberta), a local modern dance company's studio, was the the ideal showcase for my quirky developments. I installed Side Channels at Spazio Performativo's space in September of 2018. It was displayed for a month.
